Meet the new dog

I want to say “same as the old dog” here, as homage to The Who, but we didn’t have a dog before. Now we do!

She came with the name Sue, and since she went to the trouble of learning her name, we decided to keep it; we just tacked on another syllable, and now she’s called Sudo. (Computer nerds will understand; less-nerdy types will think we just left off the last syllable of those number puzzle things that started cluttering up the crossword page a few years ago; everyone else, just go with it.)

She’s a retired racing greyhound, and we adopted her through Greyhound Options, an excellent Massachusetts greyhound rescue organization. She was in a wonderful foster home for several weeks, and now she’s in our home.

So for today at least, I’m going to be that person who posts dog pictures on the internet, and tells you all about how right at this moment she’s twitching her toes in her sleep, and how earlier today she made that toy duck honk for mercy.

Should you want to read more about greyhounds, I highly recommend Cynthia Branigan’s book, Adopting the Racing Greyhound (3rd edition). If you’re just interested in photos and anecdotes, however, stay tuned.

What I’m reading: Better, Atul Gawande; Salvage the Bones, Jesmyn Ward

Like Deb over at Smitten Kitchen, the America’s Test Kitchen recipe is my go-to for scones (also muffins). I didn’t have any currants on hand (sadly), but I had dried apricots, so I chopped those up and used them instead. You can follow the recipe in the ATK book if you have it, or on SK if not.

I don’t have a biscuit cutter (though I do have cups that can be turned upside down, and a cookie cutter shaped like a leaf), so I just rolled the dough out into a circle and cut it into eight triangular wedges. I also brushed a few drops of cream over the top of each, and a sprinkle of cinnamon, because why not.
